What are the three types of characteristics used to describe mental disorders?
Behavioural, emotional, and cognitive characteristics — these describe how disorders affect actions, feelings, and thoughts.
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
Panic (e.g. crying or running away) and avoidance of the phobic stimulus.
What are the emotional and cognitive characteristics of phobias?
Emotionally: anxiety and fear. Cognitively: irrational beliefs and selective attention to the threat.
What are the behavioural characteristics of depression?
Reduced activity levels, sleep or appetite disturbances, and possibly self-harm.
What are the emotional and cognitive characteristics of depression?
Emotionally: low mood, anger, low self-esteem. Cognitively: negative thoughts (e.g. Beck’s triad) and poor concentration.
