(7 cards)
what are the 6 AO1 points you must know for statistical infrequency?
-Definition
-How it’s Measured
-Typical Distribution
-Example – IQ
-Objective and Quantifiable
-Used in Clinical Settings
What is the definition of statistical infrequency?
Abnormality is when behaviour is numerically rare or statistically unusual compared to the general population.
How is statistical infrequency measured?
Using mathematical techniques like normal distribution, to see how common or rare a behaviour is
What does a normal distribution curve show in this context?
Most people fall near the average, and those 2+ standard deviations from the mean are considered abnormal.
Give an example of statistical infrequency using IQ.
An IQ below 70 is statistically rare (about 2.5% of the population), so it’s considered abnormal.
What is a strength of this definition?
It is objective and data-based, using clear, quantifiable cut-offs to define abnormality
How is statistical infrequency used in clinical diagnosis?
It’s used to help diagnose conditions like intellectual disability disorder, which depends on a low IQ score.
