What is the definition of failure to function adequately?
Abnormality is defined as an inability to cope with everyday life, such as work, hygiene, or relationships.
What type of behaviours does this definition focus on?
It focuses on observable behaviours that interfere with daily functioning and well-being.
What are some of Rosenhan & Seligman’s criteria for dysfunction?
Signs include personal distress, maladaptiveness, unpredictability, irrationality, observer discomfort, and violation of moral standards.
Give an example of a mental disorder that shows failure to function
A person with severe depression may not be able to work, maintain hygiene, or leave the house — failing to cope with daily life.
What is a limitation of this definition?
It is subjective — what counts as “failing” can vary, but it’s more clear when distress or danger is significant.
How is this different from deviation from social norms?
Someone may deviate from norms but still function well. FFA focuses on the impact on day-to-day life, not just unusual behaviour.
