-Ellis’ ABC Model Overview
-A = Activating Event
-B = Beliefs
-C = Consequences
-Types of Irrational Beliefs
-Depression Maintained by Irrational Thinking
What is the main idea behind Ellis’ ABC model?
Depression results from irrational thoughts following an event. The model includes: Activating event (A), Beliefs (B), and Consequences (C).
What does ‘A’ stand for in Ellis’ ABC model?
Activating event – a negative external event, such as failing an exam or being rejected, that starts the process.
What does ‘B’ stand for in Ellis’ model and why is it important?
Beliefs – either rational or irrational thoughts about the event. Irrational beliefs cause negative emotions.
E.g., “If I fail, I’m worthless.”
What does ‘C’ stand for in Ellis’ model?
Consequences – emotional and behavioural outcomes like depression, anxiety, or withdrawal, resulting from irrational beliefs.
What are examples of irrational beliefs in Ellis’ theory?
Musturbation – I must be perfect.
I-can’t-stand-it-itis – Everything must go my way.
Utopianism – The world should always be fair.
What maintains depression according to Ellis?
It’s not the event, but the irrational interpretation of it. Changing these beliefs can break the cycle of depression.
