What is cholesterol
a waxy, fat like substance found in your blood. it’s essential for building cells and making certain hormones and vitamins
types of cholesterol
- LDL (low density lipoprotein)
- HDL (high density lipoprotein)
- Triglycerides
what is LDL (low density lipoprotein)
It is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol because high levels can clog arteries
What is HDL (High density lipoprotein)
Known as ‘good’ cholesterol
it helps remove LDL from your bloodstream
What is triglycerides
A type of fat in the blood; high levels can also raise heart disease risk
Why does cholesterol matter in your body
- building healthy cells
- producing hormones like estrogen and testosterone
-making vitamin D
-Digesting fats by producing bile
How to keep cholesterol healthy
-eat healthy fats (olive oil, nuts)
-avoid trans fats and excessive saturated fats
-excercise regularly
-Don’t smoke
-Maintain a healthy weight
What can excess LDL lead to
-Plaque buildup in artery walls
-Narrowed or blocked arteries
-increased risk of heart attack and stroke
