Chondroitin Sulphate Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is Chondroitin Sulphate?
Chondroitin sulphate is a type of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and a major component of the extracellular matrix in connective tissues, especially in cartilage and joint connective tissue. It provides resistance to compression, partially by thickening synovial fluid.
What are the therapeutic uses of Chondroitin Sulphate?
Chondroitin sulphate is used for osteoarthritis. It protects cartilage by reducing degradative enzymes, decreasing inflammation (COX-2, CRP), and increasing hyaluronic acid synthesis for joint lubrication.
What is the recommended dosage for Chondroitin Sulphate in osteoarthritis?
200–400 mg two to three times a day or 1000–1200 mg as a single daily dose.
What are the absorption rates of Chondroitin Sulphate?
Only 8–18% of orally administered chondroitin is absorbed.
What are the safety concerns of Chondroitin Sulphate supplementation?
Chondroitin may exacerbate asthma in sensitive individuals and can increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, raising the risk of bleeding and bruising.
