2
Q

what are the assumptions of the cognitive approach

A

our mind should be studied scientifically in lab conditions, our mind works like a computer, they use a stimulus and response

3
Q

what does the internal mental process state

A

the cognitive approach studies information processing in the ways we attract store and retrieve info to guide our behaviour

Q

what is a schema

A

a mental framework that corporates our idea about a human or a situation, it helps our brain organise and interpret information

through experience

6
Q

what does the computer analogy suggest

A

the human mind is like a computer, such computational models use the concepts of a central processing unit coding and the use of stores to hold info.

7
Q

what is INPUT

A

info from the environment is gathered via senses and is encoded by the individual

Q

what is the difference between a computer and the brain

A

a computer receives every single info whilst our brain only pays attention to certain things

the brain can lose some info whilst a computer doesnt

a computer can delete info whilst our brain cant

a computer is emotionless, our brain has emotion

Q

what is the a03 for the computer model belief

A

its oversimplistic- tries to reduce the human mind to be computer like, ignores individual differences and the role of emotion in behaviour

its determinist- it suggests humans lack free will and they arent in control for their actions

Q

what is cognitive neuroscience

A

this is the scientific study on the influence of brain structure on mental processes

It uses fmri and pet scans

13
Q

what is a fmri

A

this measures blood flow in the brain and the energy released by haemoglobin using radio waves and a magnetic field

what is a pet scan

A

scans for activity in the brain of a radioactive glucose

Q

what is the A03 of cognitive neuroscience

A

the data is empirical

practical application can be controversial-brain fingerprinting measures brain waves from a EEG, used with james grinder, leads to a overreliance on science

Q

what is the a03 for the cognitive approach

A

produced successful treatment, led to cbt - link to holon et al-fewer pps relapse after taking cbt compared to those taking drugs

research uses human pps- this is different to the biological and behaviourist approach that tends to use animals- its possible to generalise the results

it uses the scientific method of investigation which provides researchers with a rigorous method for understanding how the mind works. e.g. peterson and peterson lab experiments.based on research that establishes cause and effect.

low in ecological validity(counter)

soft deterministic approach
