endegenous pacemakers Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is an endegenous pacemaker
internal body clocks that regulate many of our biological rythmns such as the importance of the SCN for the sleep wake cycle or hormones for the menstrual cycle
what is the SCN
Tiny bundle nerve cells located in the hypothalamus in each hemisphere of the brain, influential for maintaining circadian rythmns such as the SWC
what are the 2 studies for endegenous pacemakers
de coursey et al and morgan et al
what happened in de courseys study
he destroyed the SCN in 30 chipmunks, they were returned to their natural enviornment and observed for 30 days, they had been killed by predators as they were awake when they shouldve been asleep
what is the a03 for this
ethical issues- he risked the life of the chipmunks all for a study, we dont know whether the ends justifies the means for this study, the results arent that significant
what was morgans study
he bred hamsters so they had a circadian rythmn of 20 hours, he then removed the scn from these hamsters and placed them in normal hamsters. the hamsters then displayed the same abnormal circadian rythmn of 20 hours
what is the A03 FOR THIS STUDY
There are extrapolation issues raised from this as he used hamsters.
