BIO PSYCH Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the nervous system divided into
Central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
What does the nervous system do
Transmits electrical impulses from one part of the body to the other
What are the 2 main functions of the nervous system
Collect or process or respond to info in the environment, co ordinate the different working organs in the body
What is the CNS
Acts as the centre from which the physiology of an individual is controlled, co ordinates breathing, heart rate, eating
What does the CNS consist of
The brain and the spinal cord
What is the job of the brain
To ensure life is maintained, parts of the brain are primitive and concerned with vital functioning
What is the job of the spinal cord
To transfer electrical signals from the brain to the peripheral nervous system
What does the peripheral nervous system do
Sends info from the outside world into the CNS and transmits messages from the CNS to the glands and muscles
What is the PNS divided into
The Somatic nervous system and Autonomic nervous shstem
What is the somatic nervous system
Transmits information from the receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS that directs the muscles how to act
What is the ANS
Responsible for your unconscious bodily functions. It transmits and receives impulses from the organs
What is the ANS divided into
The parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous system
What is the parasympathetic nervous system
Coordinates our organs for when we need to relax and reserve energy
What is the sympathetic nervous system
Coordinates our organs for when we are in situations when we need our energy- fight or flight
what is a neuron
a nerve cell that receives and transmits impulses to other cells through electrical and chemical signals
what does a neuron consist of
dendrites,axons,cell body,synapse
what is the function of a dendrite
receives input from other neurons
what is the function of the cell body
to protect the cell
what is the function of an axon
carrys impulses away from the cell body
what are synapses
the space between neurons
what does a motor neuron do
carrys impulses from the CNS to other parts of the body
what do relay neurons do
rest between motor and sensory neurons and connect the sensory and motor neuron
what do sensory neurons do
transmits electrical impulses from the sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord.
what is synaptic transmission
process where neighbouring neurons send messages across the gap that seperates them
