Communication and Homeostasis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Why do multicellular organisms need communication systems?
To respond to internal and external changes and coordinate different organs.
What are the two main types of communication in organisms?
Nervous and hormonal.
What is cell signalling?
Process where cells communicate via chemical signals.
What are the two types of cell signalling?
Signalling between adjacent cells and distant cells.
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a constant internal environment.
What are the roles of receptors and effectors in homeostasis?
Receptors detect stimuli, effectors carry out responses.
What is the difference between negative and positive feedback?
Negative reverses a change, positive amplifies a change.
How do ectotherms regulate body temperature?
Behavioural responses like basking or seeking shade
How do endotherms detect temperature changes?
Peripheral receptors send info to hypothalamus.
What are the physiological responses used by endotherms for thermoregulation?
Sweating, vasodilation, shivering, vasoconstriction
