Populations and Sustainability Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the difference between population size and population density?
Population size = total number of individuals. Density = individuals per unit area.
What are limiting factors in population size?
Food, water, shelter, disease, predation.
What are the stages of population growth?
Lag phase, log phase, stationary phase, death phase.
What are density-dependent factors?
Effects depend on population size, e.g. disease, competition.
What are density-independent factors?
Effects occur regardless of population size, e.g. natural disasters.
What is conservation?
Active management to maintain biodiversity.
What is preservation?
Protection of ecosystems by minimising human impact.
What is sustainable management?
Using resources in a way that meets current and future needs.
What is the role of coppicing and pollarding?
Sustainable wood harvesting by cutting trees at base or higher up
What is rotational forestry?
Felling only a portion at a time to allow regrowth.
What is ecotourism?
Tourism that supports conservation and benefits locals
How are marine reserves used in conservation?
Protect breeding grounds, prevent overfishing.
What is sustainable fishing?
Catch limits, seasonal restrictions, selective gear
How is the conflict between conservation and human needs managed?
By compromise, education, legislation, and involving local people.
