International anarch VS society of states Flashcards
(8 cards)
Who are the main actors in anarchical global politics, according to realists?
States are the principal actors in global politics.
→ Each acts in its own self-interest with no higher power above them.
What do realists mean by ‘international anarchy’?
There is no higher authority than the sovereign state—no world government.
→ Global politics is anarchical, like a society without government.
realism vs liberalism on human nature
Realism:
Humans act selfishly, and thus
so do states.
Liberalism:
Humans act selflessly, and thus so do states
realism vs liberalism on power
Realism:
States seek power in a world where power is limited. power gives a state security on an anarchical world
Liberalism:
all states can lose and gain power, but its in a states interest to cooperate rather than resort to conflict
realism vs liberalism on order and security
Realism:
the world is anarchical. so there is a lack of trust between states, resulting in the security dilemma
Liberals:
the world is one of complex interdependence, in which there is harmony through cooperation
realism vs liberalism on likelihood of conflict
Realism:
conflict is inevitable but not constant due to the security dilemma
Liberals:
states prioritise cooperation over conflict
realism vs liberalism on International organisations
realism:
international organisations are ineffective and irrelevant. cooperation is difficult due to the selfish nature of states
liberalism:
there armoire international organisations than ever before, and their influence is growing
realism vs liberalism on the state
realism:
states are the principle actor in politics. that are selfish, reflecting human nature
liberals:
states are becoming less relevant due to the rise in global governance, increasing cooperation
