FINALS CHAPTER 17: EVOLUTION Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?
The scientific explanation for the unity and diversity of life based on the fact that modern organisms evolved through descent from common ancestors
What were the three patterns of diversity that Darwin focused on?
Species vary globally
Species vary locally
Species vary over time
What does it mean that species vary globally?
Different yet ecologically similar species inhabit separated but ecologically similar habitats around the globe.
What does it mean that species vary locally?
Locations that are close to one another yet have different ecological conditions will have similar species with specific adaptations to fit the climate
What does it mean that species vary over time?
Many extinct animals are similar to, yet different from, living species
Define natural selection
The process by which organisms in nature with variations most suited to their local environment survive and leave more offspring
How does natural selection occur?
Th environment an organism is in determines what traits are favorable and what traits will help the organism survive
Define adaptation
The process by which organisms develop new traits in order to help them better survive in their environment
Define artificial selection
Humans choose and breed what traits they find favorable in an organism
Define survival of the fittest
Do you have the trait necessary to survive and reproduce
