What is Power?
Power is discussed in four forms in the source. Most people discuss the first form, some the second, but few discuss the others.
What is Form 1 of Power?
Form 1: Interpersonal Power
Definition: The capacity that person A has to influence the behavior of person B so that B acts in accordance with A’s wishes.
What are the characteristics of Interpersonal Power?
Interpersonal power must be granted by others, does not have to be used, and requires B to be dependent on A.
What are the bases of Interpersonal Power?
Bases of Interpersonal Power include Position Power and Personal Power.
What is Position Power?
Position Power stems from the position a person holds in the organization, including legitimate, coercive, and reward power.
What is Personal Power?
Personal Power stems from an individual’s unique characteristics, including expert power and referent power.
What is Form 2 of Power?
Form 2: Agenda-Shaping
Definition: When a person or group creates or reinforces barriers to the public airing of conflicts.
What are structural barriers in Agenda-Shaping?
Structural barriers prevent people from voicing issues, such as a speaker being elevated on a stage or certain questions being off the table.
What is Form 3 of Power?
Form 3: Domination
Definition: When one does not even think of voicing disagreement with certain ideas, groups, or interests.
What does Domination imply about conflict?
Domination means there are potential conflicts we aren’t even thinking of, as power operates in what we take for granted.
What is Form 4 of Power?
Form 4: Disciplinary Power
Definition: The internalization of discipline.
How does Disciplinary Power affect identity?
Disciplinary power ties our sense of self to certain ideas and interests, leading us to control ourselves.
What is conflict management?
Conflict management refers to resolving disagreements effectively.
What are some ways to manage conflict?
Ways to manage conflict include changing the structure, changing the composition of the team, creating a common opposing force, and considering majority rule.
What is the Avoidance conflict resolution strategy?
Avoidance is uncooperative and unassertive, where individuals deny conflict exists and postpone decisions.
What is the Accommodation conflict resolution strategy?
Accommodation is cooperative and unassertive, where the person gives in to what the other side wants.
What is the Compromise conflict resolution strategy?
Compromise is a middle-ground style where individuals express their concerns while respecting the other person’s goals.
What is the Collaboration conflict resolution strategy?
Collaboration is high on both assertiveness and cooperation, aiming for a win-win solution.
What is the Competition conflict resolution strategy?
Competition is when users seek to achieve their goals regardless of others’ feelings, potentially harming relationships.
What is the consequence of always seeking to maximize one’s own outcomes?
It can come at the expense of others’ well-being.
When can seeking one’s own outcomes be effective?
If one has strong moral objections to the alternatives or if the alternatives are unethical or harmful.
