What is an ecosystem
An ecosystem is a unit made up of two parts:
living things (plants, animals and bacteria) and
their non living surroundings or environment - air water soil and the climate (how warm or wet it is)
A producer found in the school playing field -grass
A consumer that is also a farm animal - cow
A decomposer that gets put on pizzas - mushroom

Lianas
Lianas are thick vines that loop around tree trunks to obtain sunlight
Epiphytes
Epiphytes are also called air plants as they grow on tree branches and perch there
(diagram of a tropical rainforest)
(1) The roots quickly take up the nutrients again
(2) Decomposers release the nutrients from them
(3) The nutrients helpt he vegetation to grow
(4) Dead leaves and animals waste fall all year round
(5)The soil down here is poor because the nutrients dont get a chance to sink in
Most insects and animals in the rainforest live in the canopy because it is the thickest layer
Many leaves have drip tips so that rainwater can drip off
Roots grow close to the soil surface so that it can absorb more nutrients
The emergents have buttress roots so that they cannot fall/ and it stops themselves from toppling over.
The plants on the forest floor have dark green leaves all year round so that they can trap as much as possible
(layer) (height)
emergents 35 - 60
canopy 20 - 30
under canopy 3 - 5
shrub layer less than 1
