Why did the princes pay the engineers?
The princes paid the engineers to invent new weapons like cannons of different kinds, stronger fortifications and new ways of knocking down enemy defences.
People wanted to move goods quickly and cheaply for trading. This meant building good roads, bridges and canals. It also meant building better ships when the voyages of discovery had been made. People invented new instruments for surveying and finding the way at sea. This meant better maps could now be made and crossing the oceans was much safer.
