ALL MATH FORMULAS - PHYSICS Flashcards
3.1 Pushes and Pulls
Weight = mass x gravity
= m x g
g = gravitational field strength
g on earth = 10 N/1 kg
g on moon = 1.6 N/1 kg
m = weight/gravity
3.2 Forces, Work and Power
Work = Force x distance
W = F x d
F = W/d
d = W/F
UNIT OF WORK
1 J = 1 NM
Joules = Newton x Metre
Power = work done/time taken
P = W/t
W = P x t
t = W/p
OR
Power = energy converted/time taken
P = E/t
E = P x t
t = E/P
UNIT OF POWER:
1 Watt = 1 Joule/second
1 KW = 1000 Watts
1 MW = 100, 000,0 (1 million) (mega)
3.4 On the Move
Speed = distance/time
S = d/t
d = s x t
t = d/s
units: m/s, cm/s, miles/h, km/h
3.4 Acceleration
F = m x a
1 N = 1kg m/s *2
Acceleration = change in speed/time taken
Change in speed = final speed - initial speed
= v - u
Acceleration = final speed - initial speed/time
a = v - u/t
Units of acceleration
m/s/s = m/s divided by s/1
= m/s x 1/s
= m/s *2 or cm/s *2
(examples)
speed increasing
u = 0 m/s
v = 20 m/s
v - u = 20 m/s - 0 m m/s
= 20 m/s
Acceleration is positive.
speed decreasing
u = 30 m/s
v = 0 m/s
v - u = 0 m/s - 30 m/s
= - 30 m/s
Acceleration is negative. Negative acceleration is deceleration.
(EXAMPLE OF A CONFUSING SUM - IN LAB COPY)
Power = work/time
Work = force x distance
Since Weight is a force
Weight = mass x gravity
= blah blah kg x 10N/kg
= blah blah N
work = blah blah N x blah m (time)
= blah blah Nm
= blah blah J (since 1 J = 1 Nm)
3.6 Under Pressure
Pressure = Force/Area
P = F/A
F = P x A
A = F/P
Units of Pressure
N/m *2 or N/cm *2
1 N/m *2 = 1 Pascal
A = Length x Breadth
