History - The Catholic Church fights back Flashcards
(6 cards)
Who was the new pope and why was he chosen?
In 1534, a new Pope - Paul III was chosen because he was very clever, and had a strong character. He realised that the Catholic Church could never stop the Protestants by fighting. He also saw that there were many things which were wrong in the Church, and that it would have to change.
What did this new Pope do
(1) He stopped many of the bad things such as selling pardons for sins
(2) He made the bishops go back from Rome to live in their own areas
(3) He started schools where the ordinary priests could be educated, because many of them still could not read or write.
(4) He severely punished any churchmen who did not behave.
(5) He set up courts which could torture and execute people who were not being true Catholics.
(6) Finally, most importantly he agreed to a new order of very special monks, called the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits.
What was the Society of Jesus
The Society of Jesus or the Jesuits were a group of very clever monks. They (did not wear special robes/live in monasteries) lived in ordinary ways and worked with very strict discipline, like soldiers. The Jesuits were teachers and missionaries. They trained for ten years and were very clever at arguing. They were very religious, brave and honest. They did not force people to be Catholic instead they discussed religion and made people want to join the Catholic Church.
Who started the Jesuits
The Society had been started by a Spanish nobleman, Ignatius Loyola who had been a soldier. He had been very badly wounded and almost died. Then he decided he would spend the rest of his life fighting for the Catholic Church.
By the end of the ________, a number of countries in Europe had come back to being _______ again, Many of the people in Central and South America, Japan and parts of India had become Catholic because of the work of the Jesuit missionaries

THE THIRTY YEARS WAR -
The Protestants and the Catholics both became very strong. Both Churches believed they were right. A terrible war broke out between them from 1618 - 1648. Almost all the countries in Europe took part at one time or another. but in the countries which are now Germany, Czechslovalakia and Poland suffered the most. Both sides did terrible things to the other side - killing everyone in the towns they captured, torturing anyone from the other side they caught, burning towns.
The 30 years war was, however, the last of the really great wars abt religion in Europe. After this, the Protestants and the Catholics generally agreed that each Church could worship the way it wanted.
