What is the HSE?
The health and safety executive is the national independent watchdog for work related health safety and illness. It acts in the public interest to reduce work related deaths and injuries.
What does the HSE do to improve safety?
Ensuring risks in workplace are properly controlled.
HSE help businesses adapt to change in occupational h&s law and practise.
How long should H&S data be kept for?
Technically forever subject to the nature and intended use. For example asbestos exposure may be required to monitor long term illness such as asbestosis.
What is a construction phase plan and what does it include?
The Construction phase plan is a health and safety management document for the project. It outlines the plan for how work will be completed safely .
Include : detail of project, type of work, team and emergency arrangements
It will identify key H&S risks and the control measures that will be implemented to minimise risks or eliminate them.
What is the considerate constructor scheme?
CCS non profit organisation which encourages contractors and supply chain to implement best practice.
Which type of accident kills the most construction workers?
Falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents on construction sites.
What are common health risks in the construction industry?
Working from height
falls, trips and slips
moving equipment
Noise
Vibration
Asbestos
Electricity
Ariborne dust
What does PPE stand for? Who is responsible for providing? What does it include?
Personal protective equipment
Employees are responsible for providing PPE equipment
Hard hat
Hi vis
Steel toe cap
Gloves
Eyes and hearing protection
When you last visit site what action did you take to maintain your own health and safety?
Wear full PPE
Attend sit induction and adhere to site rules
Understand the risks and be due dilligent in mitigating them
Report potential safety issues to site management
Follow pedestrian routes.
How do you and your company keep you safe at work?
under H&s work act. company must provide welfare facilities, safe equipment, first aid, record an injuries, sign in and out of the office, take phone with me at all times, sign in and out of site.
You are going to complete a site visit on your own what should you do before you even leave the office?
Inform my manager or office manager where ia m going and when i expect to leave site.
Sign in and out
Carry out a pre-assessment of the hazards and risks likely to be encounter on the visit.
Make site manage aware of visit and check that i have the correct PPE.
What is a CSCS card?
Validate that a construction worker or visitor is safe to work within their role on a construction site.
A member of the public has been injured by work activities and is taken to hospital for treatment. What should happen?
Accident involving the public must be reported to the HSE if they result in an injury and taken to hospital
Site management should investigate the cause of the accident and take step to prevent reoccurrence.
The site has been issued a prohibition notice by the health and safety executive. What does this mean?
If the HSE believes that work activities give rise to risk of serious personal injury they will issue a prohibition notice . This requires work to stop immediately, activity must not resume until action is taken to remove or control the risk.
What should you do if you find an injured person on site?
Identify and mitigate potential dangers make sure it is safe to enter
Raise the alarm and call for help
Depending on nature of the injury reassure and make them comfortable until the first aider or paramedic arrives.
When should a defibrillator be used?
An AED analysed the heart rhythm of people in cardiac arrest. When appropriate it delivers electrical shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm.
What is asbestos?
Naturally occurring fibrous mineral which was widely used in building material due to its strength and heat resistance.
What are the different types of asbestos surveys?
Management survey. The purpose of the management survey is to manage during the normal occupation and use of premises.
Refurbishment/ demolition survey- The R&D survey is required where the premises or part of it needs refurbishing.
What are the common types of asbestos?
Crocidolite - Blue asbestos- the most lethal
Amosite- Brown asbestos- the second deadliest
Chrysotile- White asbestos- most common type found.
What would you do if you unexpectedly found asbestos on site?
Stop works immediately and ensure the area is safe (nobody can access)
Report the matter to the site manager
Asbestos specialist will need to test it to identify the type and remove it safely.
Is there any regulation around asbestos?
Yes control of asbestos regulation that governs the UK.
And Asbestos guidance note RICS.
Where is asbestos commonly found in older buildings?
Floor and ceiling tiles
Cement gutters and downpipes
Insulated boards
Soffits
What is an asbestos management plan?
Crucial document which details how asbestos will be manage in a property and what activities will be engaged to ensure people remain safe from asbestos exposure.
When asbestos is found what are the different methods for managing the material?
Remove- Eliminate the risk for future building users
Encapsulate- The process of applying a protective layer onto the asbestos materials
