Human Bio Unit 1 - Cystic Fibrosis Flashcards
Cause
Mutation to the gene that make a channel protein
Mucus can’t becomes sticky and can’t be dislodged and restricts airways
Symptoms of CF
Coughs
Repeated chest infections
Prolonged diarrhoea
Poor weight gain
What the mutated channel protein should do
Protein pumps chloride ions out of the epithelial cells to lower the water potential of mucus and allows it to be removed by cilia
Effects of CF on the pancreas
Stops it digesting starch properly because it blocks the pancreatic duct
What is the type of mutation that causes CF?
Deletion
What does the gene that people with CF don’t have code for?
CFTR prtein
What type of pancreatic does CF cause?
Chronic
Symptoms of CF?
Coughs
Repeated chest infections
Prolonged diarrhoea
Poor weight gain
How can CF be treated?
Physiotherapy
Exercise
Medication
Nutrition
What causes the CFTR protein to not function properly?
Wrong shape and does not get inserted in the membrane
Why do CF sufferers need to eat a highly nutritious diet?
Mucus blocks pancreatic duct and causes reduction in secretion of enzymes so less digestion of food
Thick mucus reduces absorption of products of digestion
