3 layers in blood
Plasma (yellow)
White blood cells and platelets (blue/grey)
Red blood cells (red)
Where is blood produced?
Inside bone marrow
What’s the plasma made up of?
90% water
10% substances
Roles of the plasma
Transports substances around the body
What does plasma transport?
Urea from liver to kidneys
Hormones
Antibodies
White blood cells
Important for defence:
Lymphocytes - produce antibodies and antitoxins
Phagocytes - engulf and destroys pathogens
How many white blood cells are there per ml of blood?
5000 to 7000
How platelets clot blood
Enzyme released at the site of the cut
Coverts soluble blood protein fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin
Forms blood clot
How many platelets are there per ml of blood?
200,000 to 300,000
Red blood cells layer
45% of blood volume in healthy people
Transport oxygen from lungs to cells
4 to 6 million per ml of blood
