諾
Agreement
Radicals: 言 say + 艹 flowers + 右 right
You say something and the flowers are right in agreement. The flowers see where you are coming from when you say what you say. You and the flowers are in complete agreement.
Reading: だく
You and the flowers are in agreement on the fact that neither of you like when a duck (だく) walks across the flowers. You don’t like having a duck walk on the flowers because the duck will poo in the flowers and then you have to worry about stepping in it. And the flowers just don’t like having duck poo in their face.
盟
Alliance
Radicals: 明 bright + 皿 plate
I’ll give you this bright plate if you agree to an alliance with me. I know you like things that are bright, and I know you like plates too. Therefore, this bright plate should be more than enough to convince you to enter into an alliance with me.
Reading: めい
The person you are trying to get in an alliance with you is the captain of the Mayflower (めい). You want to be in an alliance with the captain of the Mayflower because you really like boats. You want to ride on the Mayflower like, so bad.

Commander
Radicals: 将 commander
The commander radical and the commander kanji are the same!
Reading: しょう
Who is the commander of Japan? The Shougun (しょう)! And if you ever say anyone else or vote for someone else or even THINK about someone else being the commander, he’ll find you and cut off your head.

Dance
Radicals: 無 nothing + 舛 dance
The nothing dance is still a dance!
Reading: ぶ
To help you do this dance you need some booze (ぶ). Just enough so it’s easier to think of nothing, let all your fears go, and dance.

Debt
Radicals: ｲ leader + 責 blame
Your leader gets the blame if your company is in debt. They’re the one who led you all into that debt, so they should get the blame too.
Reading: さい
To pay off this debt your leader says you need to sell your cyborg (さい) to help the company. You fight him! You yell! You scream! The cyborg puts a half-human half-robot hand on your shoulder and shakes its head sadly.

Deed
Radicals: ｲ leader + 支 branch
The leader of your branch became the leader from doing deeds. You can’t rise to the rank of branch leader if you don’t perform a certain number of deeds! Most of them good, I hope.
Readings: き, ぎ
The deed he’s currently working on is finding your lost key (き). He doesn’t have to help, you’re the one who lost your own house-combination-car key. But he’s so used to doing deeds, he can’t help but help.
鹿
Deer
Radicals: 广 canopy + 覀 helicopter + 比 compare
A canopy and a helicopter are being compared by a deer. The deer is standing very still (as deer do) and looking very slowly between the empty canopy and the helicopter sitting next to it.
Readings: か, しか
You walk forward, about to call out to the deer, when a car (か) suddenly appears out of no where and runs the deer over! Was this all just a trap set up to murder the deer?!

Exchange
Radicals: 扌fingers + 勹 prison + 口 mouth + 儿 legs + 大 big
In prison, when you have access to a big number of fingers, mouths, and legs you can exchange them for things that are worth more to you. What are you gonna do with all these body parts in prison? You should exchange them for cigarettes and toilet alcohol.
Reading: かん
You learned this type of exchange from the mighty Genghis Khan (かん). You read a book or watched a show about him once and you’re pretty positive that Genghis Khan would exchange the body parts of his enemies all over the continents of Asia and Europe for nicer stuff.
姓
Family Name
Radicals: 女 woman + 生 life
If there’s a special woman in your life, she might eventually take your family name and make it her surname too. In Japan and other countries, tradition dictates that women change their last name when they get married and keep that name for the rest of their life. Their partner’s family name becomes their family name too.
Readings: せい, しょう
Picture this special woman in your mind. She’s changing her surname to yours and taking hold of your special saber (せい) as well. And it’s… it’s splitting in two!

Fang
Radicals: 牙
The fang radical and the fang kanji are exactly the same! Fantastic. Oh, also it means tusk. It means fang and tusk.
Readings: げ, が
Lots of animals have fangs, even ones that don’t look like they do. The coolest fang-having animal is the gecko (げ)! They have pretty sharp little fangs in their mouths and they’ll bite you if you keep tapping their glass cages like that. Cut it out.
旧
Former
Radicals: 丨stick + 日 sun
There’s a stick next to the sun, reflecting on its former glory. The stick used to be a great tree, and the stick thinks that if it stays by the sun long enough it might return to its former form as a towering tree.
Reading: きゅう
It’s working, it’s working! The stick is returning to its former state and… w-wuh? It sprouted a cucumber (きゅう).
炒
Fry
Radicals: 火 fire + 少 few
Fire is one of a few things you’ll need to fry things.
Readings: いた, い
You love to fry things and are also an adventurous eater (いた). This means you’ll fry and eat just about anything. Fried ostrich, fried alligator, fried chocolate, you name it!
般
Generally
Radicals: 舟 boat + 殳 weapon
A boat will have at least one weapon, generally.
Reading: はん
Generally a boat with a weapon will be owned by Han (はん) Solo.
津
Harbor
Radicals: 氵tsunami + 聿 brush
There’s a huge tsunami, caused by a giant brush, fast approaching you and your harbor.
Reading: つ
You’ll defend your harbor with your two (つ) best friends, that’s how! Luckily, your two friends specialize in defending harbors from giant brush-caused tsunamis. Quite the occupation.
療
Heal
Radicals: 疒 sick + 尞 charcoal
If someone is sick feed them charcoal to heal them. Okay, so maybe you shouldn’t feed it directly to them, but charcoal has amazing water filtration powers. So put charcoal in their water and the water will heal them right up.
Reading: りょう
You aren’t the only one that needs to be healed, so you take your row (りょう) boat out onto the lake where your town gets its drinking water and you dump a bunch of charcoal into it! Now everyone will be healed when they drink.
継
Inherit
Radicals: 糸 thread + L lion + 米 rice
With a thread, a lion sews together all the rice he’ll inherit from his parents one day. He’s convinced his parents are going to try to keep some of his inheritance from him, so he’s linking it all together so it can’t go anywhere.
Reading: けい
If you’re going to inherit something from your parents, try to convince them to make it cake (けい), not rice. A single cake is much easier to keep track of and probably tastier (though it will be super stale by the time they die).

Leave behind
Radicals: ⻌ scooter + 貴 valuable
When you go on a scooter, anything valuable, you need to leave behind.
Readings: い, ゆい
Anything you don’t leave behind will be stolen by eagles (い). Eagles like shiny, valuable things, especially ones that are bouncing around on you while you scoot by on a scooter.
維
Maintain
Radicals: 糸 thread + 隹 turkey
You tie a piece of thread to your turkey in order to maintain proximity to it. The turkey likes to run away, so you tie a thread to it. This way you can hold the other end and maintain your turkey.
Reading: い
The reason the turkey is tugging is because there’s an eagle (い) swooping down to attack the turkey. You try to maintain control, but once you see the eagle as well, you let go of the thread.
奈
Nara
Radicals: 大 big + 示 jackhammer
There is a big jackhammer in Nara. That jackhammer is the biggest in all the land and is on display in Nara, Japan.
Reading: な
What’s the first part of Nara? Na (な). Well that’s easy.
核
Nucleus
Radicals: 木 tree + 亥 slice
You take a tree and slice it until you reach its nucleus. To get to the nucleus of the tree you have to make many a slice, but it’s possible.
Reading: かく
It looks like a cock (かく). And by cock I mean a male chicken – a rooster. Why does the nucleus of a tree look like a cock? Science is weird.
廃
Obsolete
Radicals: 广 canopy + 発 departure
This canopy, after your departure, will become obsolete. The canopy was here to protect you, but no one will need it once you’re gone.
Reading: はい
When something becomes obsolete, you must write a haiku (はい). Honestly, the best haiku are about something ending, so this is perfect.
献
Offer
Radicals: 南 south + 犬 dog
The South Dog gives you an offer. None of the other dogs in the North, East, or West offered you anything.
Reading: けん, こん
The South Dog offers you the services of Ken (けん) the samurai as you traverse his lands.
沖
Open sea
Radicals: 氵tsunami + 中 middle
There is a tsunami in the middle of the open sea. Luckily there are no ships around, so the tsunami in the middle of the open sea is not damaging to anyone.
Reading: おき
Someone dares you to go out to the open sea and surf on the middle of the tsunami. “Oki (おき) doki,” you reply. You can’t refuse a dare. Every time someone dares you to do something, you always respond with “oki doki”.
漬
Pickle
Radicals: 氵tsunami + 責 blame
Tsunamis get blamed because they pickle everything in their path. That means that everything smells of pickles after a tsunami.
Reading: つ
Looking at all those pickles, you bend down and pick up two (つ) of them. One in each hand. You look at the pickles in your hand and wonder whether to try one.
