lab manual 6 Neuroanatomy part 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is the nuclei
Neurons with a related function are grouped together into structures called nuclei.
One example is the thalamus.
what is the thalamus
Thalamus – relay point for ascending sensory information that is coming in from the
body. This information will be relayed, or projected to the cerebrum cortex
Name 3 structures which serve to protect and cushion the brain (and spinal cord)
from damage
Cranial bones/vertebral bones
cranial/spinal meninges
cerebrospinal fluid
what are the meninges
The Meninges are three layers of membranes that cover and protect your brain and spinal cord
what are the three layers of the meninges
Dura mater (outmost)
arachnoid mater (middle)
pia mater (innermost)
what is the dura matter
This is the outermost layer of the meninges and it is tough and fibrous.
what is the arachnoid matter
The arachnoid mater is the middle layer of the meninges. It is a thin, semi-transparent
layer of tissue (resembling a spider’s web).
what is the pia matter
The pia mater is the innermost layer of the meninges. It is a fine delicate membrane
this adheres to the gyri and sulci of the brain.
what is the Subarachnoid Space
This is the space between the pia matter and the arachnoid matter referred to as the subarachnoid space
What lies within the subarachnoid space?
Cerebrospinal (CSF) fluid and blood vessels
Which layer of the meninges makes the dural folds? What is the function of dural
folds?
Inner layer of dura matter : forms cerebral sinuses for the drainage of venous blood and CSF
Name the major arteries (left and right side) supplying the cerebrum
Internal carotid and vertebral arteries (left and right side)
Which two arteries join together to form the basilar artery?
Left and right vertebral arteries
The Internal carotid arteries predominately supply which region of the brain?
Anterior 2/3rds
What detail could you use to help identify a Schwann cell?
Cell nucleus - Purple dots seen on histological staining
