check on learning (13 cards)
designed to warm, humidify and clean the air to prevent upper respiratory infections (URI).
upper respiratory system
vibrissae, turbinates, mucosal epithelium, vascular plexus, sinuses
anatomy of the upper respiratory system
allergies, smoking/pollution, IgA deficiency, stress
Several conditions increase risk for URI
common cold, usually viral, symptomatic care
Rhinosinusitis
usually allergies, type I hypersensitivity, symptomatic care/immunotherapy to isotype switch antibodies from IgE to IgG4.
these occur with chronic inflammation and are surgically removed
Rhinitis
nasal polyps
usually bacterial, may involve maxillary/frontal/ethmoid/sphenoid sinus
Sinusitis
treatment of sinusitis
ABX+symptomatic care
usually bacterial following URI; most common in kids, ABX, tubes
Otitis media
angiofibroma, papilloma, plasmacytoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Tumors of upper respiratory system
squamous cell carcinoma – d/t smoking
Cancer in larynx
bacterial or irritant, mucopurulent necrotizing inflammation, emergency in kids
Tracheitis
usually viral; tonsillitis: bacterial or viral; laryngitis: usually viral.
Pharyngitis
due to increased body mass or craniofacial deformity, results in snoring, poor sleep, poor healing/immune competence; steroids, CPAP, surgery.
Sleep apnea/Pickwickian syndrome
