lesson 1- properties and classifiacrtion of matter Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is matter?
-occupies space
- can be in the form of liquids, solids, or gases
-made up of atoms
Physical properties
properties that are describe the appearance and composition of a substance.
examples of physical properties (7 technically 10)
-malleability/ductility (bend and stretch easily)
-melting point/boiling state
-solubility
-color
-crystal formation
-magnesium
-conductivity
chemical properties
reactivity of a substance with other substances or things
examples of chemical properties (7 examples)
-ability to burn /reaction to heat
-behavior in air
-reaction with water
-flash point
-reaction to red &blue litmus
-reaction with acids
-ODOR
Chemical vs Physical change
Physical change keep the same substance, even if in different forms. (e.g. water turning to ice)
Chemical change occurs when the og substance creates a new substance
Classification of matter
matter
-pure substances -mixtures
-homogeneous -heterogenous
-elements -compounds
pure substance is only made up of __________ substance
only ONE
element is a
material that cannot be further broken down in to other materials (eg, iron)
COMPOUND
when two or more elements COMBINE
(combinationnnnn πΌπΌπΌ) eg. WATER (H2O)
mixtures
combination of a pure substance where properties vary from substance to substance
mechanical or heterogenous mixture
mixture where different substances are available
(eg, soil)
SOLUTION (homogenous mixture)
different mixtures are NOT visible to the eye (eg, sugar in water)
Chemical reactions
When one or more chemical substances react to form one or more NEW chemical substances.
reactants
Substances that undergo the reaction or are combined in the reaction.
products
Substances that are produced in the reaction.
identify the reactants and products of this chemical equation.
2C2H6 + 7O2 -> 4CO2 + 6H2O
2C2H6 + 7O2 =reactants
-> 4CO2 + 6H2O= products
