lesson 9- chemical reactions and balancing equations Flashcards
(15 cards)
characteristics of chemical reactions
- all involve the production of new substances with own characteristic properties
- all involve the flow of energy
- when substances are formed sometimes changes of state are noticeable
- all are consistent with law of conservation of mass
flow of energy
when ALL chemical reactions involve transfer of energy
combustion
substance reacts with oxygen to produce heat
cellular respiration
process which living things convert food into energy
exothermic
energy is released, or exits.
endothermic
energy is absorbed or enters.
cold pack
substances react to energy absorbed from the surroundings
(e.g. an injured person)
photosynthesis
plants absorb energy from the sun to produce food
change of state
depending on reactants and environment of a reaction.
what makes a change of state occur?
temperature and pressure may change states of a reactants
Law of conservation of Mass
total mass of a system never changes.
total mass of all reactants equals what
total mass of the products
balancing chemical equations
coefficients used so there are equal numbers of atoms of each element on the reactant and product.
balance: Ca(s) + Kl(aq) = k(s) +CaCl2(aq)
Ca(s) + 2KCL(aq) = 2K(s) + CaCl2(aq)
solid magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen and aqueous magnesium chloride
Mg(s) + 2HCL(aq) = H2(g) + MgCl2 (aq)
