Lesson 3- periodic tableee Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is the periodic table?
elements but in rows that increase by atomic number
What are the horizontal rows of the periodic table called?
Periods.
What are the vertical columns in the periodic table called?
families or groups
what does a group number communicate in the outer level?
the number of electrons.
what are the 5 groups/families of the periodic table?
- Alkali Metals
- Alkaline Earth metals
- Transition Metals
- Halogens
- Noble Gases
Alkali metals
VERY reactive metals, always combined with something else in nature (like in salt)
-soft enough to cut with a butter knife
Alkaline Earth Metals
reactive metal
- combined with nonmetals in nature
- important minerals/nutrients
Transition Metal
LESS reactive harder metals
(eg. jewelry and construction metals)
Halogens
VERY reactive nonmetals
-combined with alkali metals to form salts
Noble Gases
VERY unreactive
- full outer shell (valence)
metals
-most of the elements
-good conductors or electricity and heat
-solid at room temperature typically
Non metals
- 17 elements with variations in color, state, and room temperature
Metalloids
mix of metals and nonmetals with low conductivity.
