lesson 8- specific heat capacity & climatographing Flashcards
(15 cards)
specific heat capacity
amount of energy required to raise 1g’s temperature of the substance by a single degree (how much energy does it take for ur mom to get angry)
high heat capacity meaning??
takes considerable amount of energy to increase temperature of mass of water
large energy released from a mass of water when
the temperature decreases
is specific heat capacity of water higher than air?
yes
once water is heated
water can be mixed downward by waves, turbulence, and subsiding ocean currents.
calorimeter
determines the transfer of thermal energy. any energy that is released can be detected as a change in temperature.
quantity of thermal energy
amount of thermal energy absorbed or released when temperature of a substance’s mass changes by a few degrees (one two skip a few ahh)
heat of fusion (Q=nHfus)
amount of energy absorbed when 1 mol a substance changes from solid to liquid
heat of vaporization (Q=nHvap)
amount of energy absorbed by when 1 mol changes from liquid to vapour
phase changes (IN ORDER)
- solid phase
- melting or fusion
- liquid phase
- vaporization
- vapor phase
temperature is on which axis? (phase changes)
Y AXIS
time is on which axis? (phase changes)
X AXIS
Climatograph
average temperature and precipitation for each month of the year for a specific location
climatographs: X Axis is what?
the months of the year
climatographs: Y Axis is what?
temperature and precipitation
