lesson 5- ionic compounds Flashcards
(15 cards)
ionic bonds
ionic bond forms when oppositely charged cations and anions attract
ionic properties: ionic compounds
- solid at room temperature
- dissolve in water
- conduct electricity in solution
- have high melting points
naming ionic compounds
1) name the cation (metal) first by using the elements name
2) name the anion (nonmetal) second; using first part of elements name and changing it to “ide”
What is the ionic compound of Na (sodium)
sodium chlorIDE
AICL(3) in ionic compound form
aluminum chloride
KI in ionic compound form
potassium iodide
chemical formulas for ionic compounds communicates…
the ratio of the number of each atom in the compound (eg. NaCl can be written as Na(1) Cl(1), because there is one sodium for every one chloride ion in the compound)
Ba F(2)
BA- 1
F- 2
ex. calcium oxide in ionic compound form
Ca +2 O-2
we need one of each so they cancel each other out
multivalent elements
-metals with more than one possible charge (eg. iron, Fe+2 & Fe+3)
multivalent naming
USE ROMAN NUMERALS IN BRACKETS FOLLOWING THE ELEMENT TO IDENTIFY ITS CHARGE.
if not given the charge for a multivalent element what should you do?
you use the charge that is at the top
polyatomic ions
- nonmetallic atoms bonded together that have a charge
- behave as a single ion
the chemical formula of potassium nitrate?
KNO-2, since they cancel each other out
isotopes are…
atoms of an element that differ by number of neutrons they contain
