Muscle Characteristics Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the 4 muscle characteristics?
Excitability
Contractability
Extendibility
Elasticity
Excitability
DR’s muscles ability to respond to a stimulus delivered from a motor neuron
Contractibility
DRs muscles ability to contract or shorten
Extendibility
DRs muscles capacity to stretch beyond their normal resting length
Elasticity
DRs muscles ability to return to its original resting length after it has been stretched
What are the two muscles in an antagonist called?
Agonist (Prime mover)(Contracts)
Antagonist (Stabiliser)(Relaxes)
Reciprocal Inhibition
The term used to describe the coordinated relaxing of the muscles on one side of a join to pair with the other muscle contracting.
Origin
Muscle attachment onto the bone that DOES NOT MOVE when the muscle contracts
Insertion
Muscle attachment onto the bone that MOVES when the muscle contracts
3 types of muscle contraction
Isometric
Isotonic
Isokinetic
Isometric
Muscle produces tension but DOES NOT change length. (Wall sit/Rugby Scrum)
Isotonic
Muscle produces tension and changes length, shortening or lengthening.
Isotonic Eccentric
Muscle produces tension and lengthens
Isotonic Concentric
Muscle produces tension and shortens
Isokinetic
The velocity of the muscle contraction remains constant while the length changes. This requires special equipment.
