Flashcards in Mutations Deck (13):
0

Mutation

Any change in genetic information, MUST be in sex cells to be passes on to offspring

1

Mutagenic Agents

Radiation , chemicals, x-Rays, ultra violet rays (they can cause mutations)

2

Genetic mutations

Change in the DNA sequence ->causes a change in the amino acid sequence in protein

3

List the sequence of what determines what

DNA determines amino acid sciences which determines protein shape which determines protein functions

4

Point mutation

One nucleotide is changed for another

5

Frame shift mutation

Addition or deletion of one or more nucleotides , Dangerous because EVERY amino acid after that point will be changed

6

Chromosomal mutations

Can be detected by looking at a karyote (picture of chromosome)

7

Nondisjunction

Chromosomes don't separate properly during meiosis, result in one extra or one less chromosome , can cause Down syndrome

8

Down syndrome

Trisomy 21(three 21st chromosome), mental retardation , almond shaped eyes, small ears, small head size, short , broad hands. Down's syndrome karyotype

9

Polypoidy

Extra sets of chromosomes or more than two( 3N,4N...) positive mutations in some plants

10

Deletion and addition(insertion )

Portion of a chromosome is lost or added

11

Inversion

Sections of chromosomes are switched around

12

Translocation

Part of a chromosome is transferred to another
