  • synthetic hormone identical to oxytocin secreted by posterior pituitary gland
  • given anterpartum by IV, increases frequency and force of uterine contractions and titrated until normal labor pattern established until normal labor pattern established
  • given postpartum to reduce hemorrhage

Adverse Effects

A

Fetus: dysrhythmias, intracranial hemorrhage, respiratory depression
Maternal: uterine rupture (increased in women who have delivered 5 or > children)
