Mechanism of Action
Inhibit release of FSH & LH preventing ovulation
Actions and Uses
Transdermal Contraception
1 patch/week x 3 weeks, followed by patch-free week
improve menstrual cycle regularity, decreases incidence of dysmenorrhea
Adverse Effects
Skin irritation (teach to rotate sites)
DVT, PE, CVA, MI
Concern of reduced absorption as BMI increases
Black Box Warning
Cigarette smoking increases risk of CV adverse effects, risk increases > 35y/o & heavy smoking > 15 cigarettes/day
Contraindications
Thromboembolic disorders, stroke, coronary artery disease, hepatic tumors; carcinoma of breast, uterus or ER or PR dependent tumors, pregnancy
Interactions
Decreased efficacy: rifampin, antibiotics, barbiturates, anticonvulsants, protease inhibitors, antifungals
Breakthrough bleeding: St. John’s wort
