RBC ABNORMALITIES Flashcards
(35 cards)
Normal amount of hemoglobin and it has central pallor of 1/3 diameter
NORMOCHROMIC CELL
Larger and paler than normal and it is associated with Microcytosis
HYPOCHROMIC CELL
Increased hemoglobin content and smaller than normal
HYPERCHROMIC CELL
Pertains to multiple color and blue presence of RNA due to combination of affinity of hemoglobin to acid stain and affinity of RNA to basic dye
POLYCHROMATIPHILIA / POLYCHROMASIA / DIFFUSE BASOPHILIA
Slighty Microcytic and it indicates Reticulocytes
POLYCHROMASIA
Access diff. types of hemolytic anemia, recovery from blood loss and bone marrow disorders
POLYCHROMASIA GRADING
Conditions where red cell appears PALE
HYPOCHROMASIA
2 possible causes of HYPOCHROMASIA
Decrease hemoglobin concentration
Abnormal thinness of cell (IDA & Thalassemia)
Conditions where red cells are deeply stained to abnormal thickness of cell
HYPERCHROMASIA
Red cell vary in size, both macrocytes and microcytes
ANISOCYTOSIS
It has 6-8 um size and associated with acute post hemolytic anemia and PANCYTOPENIA, hallmark of aplastic anemia
NORMOCYTE
Larger and greater than 8um
MACROCYTE
Samller and less than 6um
Microcytosis is found in: IDA & Thalassemia
MICROCYTE
Large oval shaped 9-12um
Megalocytosis is found in: Perniciuos anemia
Red cell vary in shapes
POIKILOCYTOSIS
Normal cell with biconcave dics shape and associated with acute post hemolytic anemia
DISCOCYTE
Small dense RBC with few irreg spaced and lack of central pallor
Increase in sphingomyelin and Cholesterol
Associated with Neuroacanthocytosis, Severe liver disease, Hepatitis in Newborns, Malabsorption
ACANTHOCYTE / SPUR CELL
Pocket book roll/ biscuit shape
Cell membrane is folded
Associated with HgSC ans HgCC
BISCUIT CELL / FOLDED RBC
Resembles crenated RBC
Abnormal lipid content of membrane and change in omsotic pressure
Associated with Uremia, MAHA, Liver ds, DIC, TTP, HELLP, PKD
BURR CELL SEA URCHIN / ECHINOCYTE
Cell with eccentric vacuoles
G6PD def resulting to accumulation of heinz bodies
Associated with G6PD def., HUS, MAHA
BLISTER CELL / BITE CELL
ATP deficiency due to prolonged storage of anticoagulayed blood
Associated with artifactual
ECHINOCYTE / CRENATED CELL (SEA URCHIN)
Bull’s eye appearance amd colorless area and peripheral ring
Deficiency in cholesterol and lecithin
Associated with thalassemia, liver ds, HA,HbSC, HbCC, LCAT deficiency., Obstructive liver
CODOCYTES / TARGET CELL / MEXICAN HAT CELL
Teardrop or pear with single short or long protrusion
Squeezing and fragmentation during Splenic Passage
Associated with HA,MA,MMM
TEARDROP CELL / DACRYOCYTES
Normal central pallor (Pencil or Sausage)
It has shortened life span
Defective spectrin and band protein 4.1
Associated with MA, Hypochromic anemia, Hereditary ovalocytosis
ELLIPTOCYTES / OVALOCYTES
