what does the word renaissance translate to
rebirth/restart
why is the term ‘renaissance’ a good name for the time period after the middle ages in europe
they were in a dark age during the plague and now they’ll have a rebirth, come out of the middle ages and have a golden age
how did religion in the renaissance change
it’s not the center of life anymore
how were the greeks and romans viewed
they were admired

it’s very important, especially to promote creativity

the ideal man - well rounded, good at many things: athletics, music, poetry, sculpture, and painting

people should be independent thinkers who challenge accepted ideas
how did people being independent thinkers affect the church
the church is scared of that, they were successful since people weren’t independent thinkers
why did people decide to seek fulfillment in everyday life instead of waiting until the afterlife
they were so focused on sins, forgiveness, etc. that they didn’t enjoy their life
what were patrons
people that were willing to support other people financially (like artists to make art) to grow the economy
what was the government and taxing like
independent city-states, less taxes because there was no king
who was the medici family
wealthy merchants who funded artists, architects, and scientists. had a lot of wealth and power from trade and the medici bank.

- happy to make it through the day
- spent the whole day farming or going to church
- cared mainly about religion and survival
what were renaissance men like
- want to make the most out of every day
- cared about wealth and image
- eduction and learning
humanism
- emphasis on human interest and ability rather than religion
- god gave us the skill, but we mastered it.

- emphasis on the importance of you as an individual
- your title doesn’t define you
- serfs didn’t have this

- division of the church and state
- true followers believed there was no faith/religion
- religion is separated from everything else, not the only answer

cautious; questions the truth and knowledge until they are satisfied

emphasis on greek and roman culture/philosophy

using reason and logic to solve problems; not faith

the world we live in is the reality; no supernatural creation creation. science can explain everything
