What are the female and male gonads?
Gonads: organs (glands) that produce gametes and sex hormones
Female: ovaries produce eggs and estrogen and progesterone
Male: testes produce sperm and testosterone
What are teh male and female reproductive roles?
Female: produce 1 egg per month, nourish and protect developing offspring/fetus upon conception
Male: produce millions of sperm and deliver them to female reproductive system , teh egg
What can be said about the genetic contribution of male and females?
Equal genetic contribution, they each contribute 1 copy of each chromosome, 23 each
Oviduct vs ampulla?
The oviduct refers to the entire tube connecting the ovary to fimbrae while ampulla refers to teh widest segment of this tube
Ampulla is also the site of fertilization
What are the layers of the uterus?
Endometrium (most inner): site of implantation, if also shed if theres no pregnancy
Myometrium: layer of smooth muscle, allows for contractions to push out shed lining or babies
Perimetrium: outer layer
What is an ectopic pregnancy and why is it even possible?
Implantation of the fertilized egg outside of the uterus, could be in oviduct, peritoneum or even ovary
Is possible since the oviduct is not continuous with the ovaries, there is space between the fimbrae and the ovaries
What is teh duct system in teh male anatomy?
Starts in epididymis, vas deferens, urethra
What are the accessory glands of teh male anatomy?
Prostate gland, seminal vesicles and bulbourethral glands
Where is testosterone produces specifically?
In the testes in the seminiferous tubules
What is semen composed of?
Sperm and fluids from the accessory glands (prostatic fluid, seminal fluid)
What are the two conditions of the prostate gland?
Age related enlargement: beings at middle age and may restrict flow of urine
Cancer: can be detected through rectal exam or blood test
What does seminal fluid do?
Nourishes sperm and thickens semen through amino acids, assists in movement
