Lab 8: Fetal Pig Flashcards
(24 cards)
How can the sex of the fetal pig be distinguished?
Urogential distance from anus
Female: very very close, basically right above the anus, flap near anus
Male: little hole under umbilical cord, no flap near anus
Where does the large intestine lie in fetal pig?
Left side
Where is the thyroid in a FP?
Neck region, kind of lie between the common carotid arteries
Where is teh thymus in FP?
On either side on thyroid, surrounds in from behind, not ventrally
Also on the heart, quite prominent in fetal stages
Where is teh liver in FP?
Big structure that immediately blocks everything
Where is the trachea?
Lies between the carotids, thick cartilaginous structure
Where is teh gallbladder?
Peeks out from just under teh liver
Where is the spleen in FP?
Under ribs
Left of stomach, kinda hugs it from teh side
Oddly flat
Where is the diaphragm in FP?
Lies under the lungs, abdominal aorta cuts through
Where is teh duodenum?
Structure that immediately follows the stomach, just before small intestine
Where is the pancreas in FP?
Beneath the liver and behind the stomach, maybe see it poking out
Extends from duodenum to spleen (that region)
Where are penis and testes located in FP?
Usually undescended testes so 2 lumps on inside
Penis is little tube in between
Where are the ovaries in a FP?
Look like tiny little kidneys, sideways, near the bottom of uterine arteries
Where is teh esophagus relative to the trachea?
Behind
What is the function of the peritoneum?
Serous membrane that protects abdominal organs
What are mesenteries?
Double-layer folds that support and anchor organs within teh abdominal cavity
Does the umbilical vein carry oxygen rich or poor blood and why?
Rich
Comes from placenta and goes to the heart, therefore a vein, but since placenta is only connection to mother, thats where gas exchange occurs, so blood be rich
What organs are not yet functional in human and FP?
Lungs
Where does the oxygen rich blood go once it’s in the umbilical vein?
Passes through liver via ductus venosus-> enters inferior vena cava-> right atrium-> 2 options
Option 1: flows into right ventricle-> pulmonary trunk-> ductus arteriosus -> aorta
Option 2: flows directly into left atrium through foramen ovale (bypasses pulmonary circuit)-> left ventricle-> aorta
What kind of blood in inferior vena cava?
Mixed
What is foramen ovale?
Hole between right and left atrium to bypass lungs before birth
What is ductus arteriosis?
Vessel that helps blood from pulmonary trunk bypass the pulmonary circuit
What is ductus venosus?
Vessel that allows blood to flow from umbilical vein to inferior vena cava, partially bypassing the liver
Do teh umbilical arteries carry oxygen rich or poor blood?
Poor, back to placenta
