Respiration Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is respiration
Process of transferring glucose into energy
How do organism use the energy from respiration
Build larger molecules (proteins from amino acids)
Muscles to contract (movement)
Maintain body temperature
Uses of glucose
Form starch, glycogen (storage in animal cells) and cellulose (cell walls)
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration (animals)
glucose -> lactic acid
is anaerobic respiration
Breakdown of glucose into lactic acid
Does not release as much energy
Only used in emergencies
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration (plants and yeast)
glucose -> Ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration in plants to produce ethanol
How does exercise impact respiration
Require energy for muscles to contract so more respiration is required to release energy.
What does anaerobic respiration lead to
Oxygen debt
This means that the oxygen will react with the lactic acid to produce carbon dioxide and water
Lactic acid is also transported to the liver to be converted abck to glucose
