What is the thorax?
The top part of the body
What are the lungs surrounded by
Pleural membranes
Where does inhaled air go
Through the trachea and then into the bronchi (called bronchus). Then into smaller tubes called bronchioles and then finally the alveoli.
Where does gas exchange occur
Alveoli
How does gas exchange occur in the blood
The blood has a low concentration of oxygen whilst the alevoli has a high concentration from the air. Therefor oxygen diffuses into the blood through the thin cells and attaches to the red blood cells (haemoglobin) and then into cells which have a low oxygen concentration.
The blood has a high concentration of carbon dioxide whilst the alevoli has a low concentration from the air. Therefor carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood through the thin cells.
