Specialised Cells Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is differenciation?
The process when a cell changed to become specialised for a job.
They develop different sub-cellular structures to turn into different types of cells
What is a stem cell?
A cell that hasn’t differenciated so can become any type of cell
Sperm Cells
Aim is to get Male DNA towards the egg
Long tail and streamlined head to help it swim towards the egg
Lots of mitochondria to provide the energy
Carries enzymes to digest the egg cell membrane
Nerve Cells
Function to carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another
Long cells and branched connection to form a network
Muscle cells
Function to contract quickly
Long to have space to contract
Lots of mitochondria so they can release energy to contract
Root Hair cells
Hairs on the surface of plant roots to absorb minerals from the soil
Long hairs with a large surface area to absorb minerals
Xylem and Phloem
Form tubes to transport minerals, glucose and water
The cells are long and join at he end
Xylem are hollow at the centre and the phloem has minimul subcellular structures
