Q

Religion

A

Catholics - parliament did not think oath of allegiance was serious enough after the gunpowder plot. Anti catholic demonstrations about Spanish match seen as an attack on James divine right.

Puritans - bancrofts canons, book of sports and montague controversy all angered parliament.

Not serious unless they collided with foreign policy decisions, caused a politicised and bitter radical puritan faction which could not be held at bay by his son.

Q

Finance and favourites

A

Scottish favourites - 400k on them contributed to lack of financial issues being solved and restricted subsidies to the king.

Failure of great contract led and inefficient tax system fed into foreign policy and religion issues.

Caused most issues for FP because caused James to have to be diplomatic like he wanted but not the aggressive anti Catholic policies parliament wanted.
