Set 17 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Frame
A unit of data at the Data Link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. It contains the MAC addresses, payload, and error-checking info for network communication.
Freeware
Software that is free to use, but the source code is usually not available for modification or redistribution.
FRU
(Field Replaceable Unit). A hardware component that can be easily replaced by a technician without sending the device back to the manufacturer (e.g., RAM, hard drive, power supply).
FTP
(File Transfer Protocol). A network protocol used to transfer files between systems over a TCP/IP network. Typically uses ports 20 and 21.
F-Type Connector
A coaxial cable connector used for cable TV, satellite, and broadband internet connections. It screws onto the port for a secure connection.
Full Device Encryption
Encrypts all data on a device, including system and user files, making the contents inaccessible without proper authentication (e.g., BitLocker).
Full Format
A formatting process that erases data and checks the drive for bad sectors. Slower but more thorough than a quick format.
Full Duplex
A communication mode where data can be sent and received simultaneously, increasing network efficiency (e.g., modern Ethernet and telephony).
Full Speed USB
Refers to USB 1.1, which has a maximum data transfer rate of 12 Mbps.
FQDN
(Fully Qualified Domain Name). The complete domain name for a specific computer or host on the internet (e.g., www.example.com), including hostname and domain.
Function Key (Fn Key)
A special key on laptops and compact keyboards used to access alternate functions of the F1–F12 keys, like adjusting volume or brightness.
Gaming (Windows Setting)
A section in Windows Settings that includes Game Mode, Game Bar, captures, and graphics performance options for enhancing gameplay experience.
GDDR5
(Graphics Double Data Rate 5). A high-performance video memory used in graphics cards, offering fast data throughput for gaming and 3D rendering.
GDPR
(General Data Protection Regulation). A European Union regulation that governs data protection and privacy, giving individuals more control over their personal data.
GPF
(General Protection Fault). An error that occurs when a program tries to access restricted memory, often leading to a crash or system instability.
Geofencing
A location-based service that uses GPS or RFID to create a virtual boundary, triggering an action when a device enters or leaves the area.
Geotracking
The process of tracking the physical location of a device using GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower data.
Gestures
Touchscreen or touchpad-based movements (like swiping, pinching, or tapping) used to interact with a device without a physical keyboard or mouse.
Giga (G)
A metric prefix meaning one billion (1,000,000,000). In computing, often refers to gigabytes (GB) of storage or gigahertz (GHz) of processing speed.
GPS
(Global Positioning System). A satellite-based navigation system that provides location and time data to devices on Earth using a network of orbiting satellites.
