(12 cards)
Infant: Erikson Stage
Trust vs Mistrust
-Infant is learning to trust the environment. The quality of care that the child receives plays an important role in shaping the child’s personality
Erikson: Toddler / Nursing Implications
Autonomy vs Shame / Doubt
-Learning to gain control over body and exert autonomy —- If this stage goes well they will feel good about themselves and move forward
-If everything they do is met with them doing it wrong they begin to doubt themselves and feel shameful
Erikson: Preschool
Initiative vs Guilt
-Children at this age want to try everything (initiative). The guilt may come in when the child tries, then fails and feels internally that she may have overstepped her abilities
Erikson: School - age
Industry vs Inferiority
-School agers need to feel good about themselves and that they are good at something to developed a sense of industry (excel in sports or in B/G scouts or spelling bees or music)
the process is more important than the end result
Erikson: Adolescent
Identity vs Role Confusion
-determine identity and what they believe in
-establish values
-the more experiences the better
-making life decisions (career)
-separate from parents
Piaget: Infant
Sensorimotor Stage
-Reflexive
-Primary circular reaction
-Secondary circular reaction
-Coordination of secondary
Starts to differentiate self from objects
Progression from simple reflexes to simple repetitive acts
Learns they are separate from others and object
Object permanence
Learn cause and effect
Piaget: Toddler
End of Sensorimotor — Start of preoperational
Applies knowledge and experience to new situation (trying to figure out how to do things)
Child wants cupcake but can not reach it. They figure out ways to reach the cupcake (new way to do things)
Learn to use symbolic thinking and start explaining things words and language
Represent things with learn and images
Egocentric thinking (repeating over and over) — Can not take veiw point of others
Concerned with why and how
Animism
-Tables and objects have thoughts and feeling… Table is bad if they run into the table
Piaget: Preschooler
Preoperational
-Play, especially fantasy and imitative play very important
-Child goes from being egocentric to early recognition of others points of view
-Often appear to understand more than they actually do
-Thinking is magical; do not understand causality
Piaget: School Ager
Concrete operational
-Can now think logically and perform mental operations
-Understands water in different cup is same volume
-Less rigid and egocentric
think of consequence & choose not to do it
Piaget: Adolescent
Formal Operations
-Abstract thinking develops
-Can develop strategies from improving their learning
-Think about how they feel and what they are thinking
-Can understand and feel love
-INVINCIBILITY
Where should we give IM injections
Vastus Lateralis (Less than 18 months)
-Most developed muscle in infant
Deltoid (18 months and older)
Ventrogluteal
What is the max amount of ml that an infant can have at one time?
0.5 ml
Their muscles can not absorb a lot of volume
