U3 AK5 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is a pathogen?
A bacterium, virus or other organism that can cause disease
How do we defend this?
The immune system
What is immunity?
The ability of the body to resist infection by a pathogen or destroy the organism if it succeeded in invading infecting the body
Pathogens are defended against by two specific technique
Non-specific body defences and specific cellular defences
Physical defence
Closely pot epithelial cells found in skin and inner lining of digestive and respiratory systems form a physical barrier
Chemical defence
Chemical secretions are produced against invading pathogens
Chemical defences include
Tears saliva, mucus and stomach acid
Phagocytes
A type of white blood cell
What do phagocytes have?
Lysomes which contain digestive enzymes
What do phagocytes destroy?
Pathogens by a process called phagocytosis
Stages of phagocytosis
Recognising the pathogen
Engulfing the pathogen
Destroying pathogens using digestive enzymes, containing lysosomes
What are cytokines?
Protein molecules that are important in signalling to other cells
Phagocytes release cytokines which do what?
Attract more Fargo sites to the site of infection
Stage of inflammatory response
S
Stage1
Mast cells release histamine
Stage 2
Histamine causes vasodilation of blood cell increasing capillary permeability
Stage 3
Increases blood flow leads to an increase to accumulation at site of infection resulting in phago or clotting elements
