Flashcards in Unit 10 Deck (52):
1

4 functions of the lymphatic system

-Returning excess lymph (interstitial fluid) to the blood stream
-Carry nutrients, hormones and oxygen to body tissue
-Absorbing and transporting fats & fat soluble vitamins from the digestive system
-Functioning as part of the immune system

2

3 types of vessels in the lymphatic system

-Lymphatic capillaries
-Lymphatics
-Right/Left lymph ducts

3

lymph nodes

small bean-shaped structures which provide storage for B and T cells (of the immune system)

4

Lymph fluid

clear, colourless, alkaline fluid found in the lymphatic vessels

5

3 pairs of tonsils and adenoids located in the throat

-Palatine (in oropharynx, visible through mouth)
-Nasopharyngeal (adenoids)
-Lingual (base of the tongue)

6

the spleen

left side of abdomen, storehouse for red blood cells, contains pagocytes to break down cellular bodies.
(in adults) If bone marrow is damaged, spleen can also function to produce red blood cells.

7

Thymus gland

near the heart, in the chest cavity.
Both a lymphatic and endocrine gland, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce T-cells, which mature in the thymus gland.

8

Function of tonsils and adenoids

filters for bacteria

9

Function of the spleen

- stores red blood cells, and releases when required
- breaks down red blood cells and other cellular debris
- can produce red blood cells if adult bone marrow is damaged

10

Function of the thymus gland

- stimulates the bone marrow to produce T-cells, which mature in the thymus gland
- functions as both a lymphatic and endocrine gland
