Information processing of which we are unaware; mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories
Unconscious
Reservoir of unconscious psychic energy that strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives
Id
The largely conscious executive part of personality that, according to Freud, mediates among the demands of the id, superego, and reality
Ego
The part of personality that, according to Freud, represents internalized ideals and provides standards for the judgments and future aspirations
Superego
The childhood stages of development during which, according to Freud, the id’s pleasure seeking energies focus on distinct erogenous zones
Psychosexual Stages
A boys sexual desires toward his mother and feelings of jealousy towards his father
Oedipus Complex
The process by which children incorporate their parents values into developing superegos
Identification
A lingering focus of pleasure-seeking energies at an earlier psychosexual stage, where conflicts were unsolved
Fixation
In psychoanalytic theory, the ego’s protective methods of reducing anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality
Defense Mechanism
Banishes anxiety-arousing thoughts, feelings, and memories from consciousness
Repression
Reverting to an old, usually immature behavior to ventilate your feelings
-“I guess I’m sort of angry with him”
Regression
Turning a feeling into its opposite
-“I will try to be nice to him”
Reaction Formation
Thinking someone else has you thoughts or feelings
-“I think he’s really great!”
Projection
Coming up with various explanations to justify the situation
Rationalization
Redirecting your feelings to another target
-“That professor gates me”
“That students hates the professor”
Displacement
Redirecting your feelings into a socially productive activity
-“Lets shoot spitballs at people”
Sublimation
Refusing to believe painful realities
-“I’m not even mad at him!”
Denial
Personality test, such as the Rorschach or TAT, that provide ambiguous stimuli designed to trigger projection of ones inner dynamic
Projective Test
Projective test in which people express their inner feelings and interests through the stories they make up about ambiguous scenes
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
The most widely used projective tests, a set of 10 inkblots, designed by Rorschach; seeks to identify peoples inner feelings by analyzing their interpretations of the blots
