119 HAZMAT/ HAZWASTE/ Pollution Control Fundamentals Flashcards
(19 cards)
Define the term HM
Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT): Substances that pose risk to health and enviroment.
Define the term HW
Hazardous Waste: byproduct of industrial activities that are no longer usable and is classified as dangerous due to being toxic, reactive, corrosive, or ignitable.
State the purpose and information contained on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Composition, chemical, and physical characteristics, health and safety hazards, and precautions for safe handling and use.
Explain the general procedures to be followed when a HAZMAT/HW spill is discovered
Notify, Evaluate, Contain
- If you found spill, do not leave scene and have someone near inform Maintenance Control
- Evaluate chemical and severity of spill
- When assistance arrives, don required PPE and contain spill
State the PPE required when handling HAZMAT/HW
Hand, Face, Eye, Respiratory protection.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Grease
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore.
Solid wastes must be negative buoyant / may be thrown overboard if >50NM from shore.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Hydraulic Fluid
Keep synthetic fluids separate from other types of fluids.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Fuels
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore.
Discuss the disposal limitations for Waste Oils
Put into approved containers. Dispose ashore.
Describe required training for all hands with respect to the HAZMAT/HW program
HM in work area, disposal procedures, hazard warning labels, MSDS, protective measures, and emergency procedures.
Define Oily Waste
Oil is mixed with water or other substances; no longer useful without further treatment.
Define Waste Oil
Oil that can no longer be used and is now meant to be disposed of.
Describe the actions required for oil spills outside the US Contiguous zone
Initiate immediate action to mitigate the effects of spill
Notify the predesignated fleet Navy On Scene Coordinator, by Naval Msg.
Fleet NOSC shall implement applicable oil/hazardous substance spill response plan.
Discuss proper marking of HAZMAT containers
Only approved containers, and only use the proper cautionary labels (do not obscure other identifying marks).
Discuss the precautions observed when handling flammables
No smoking; Keep away from open flames, hot work areas, strong oxidizing; Ensure proper ventilation of area; protect from physical damage; ground containers before transfer
State the location and contents of the Oil Spill Containment Kit
One in each Hangar Bay; gloves, goggles, aprons, absorbent pads.
What Chapter is Safety Located in the SDS
Chapter 5.
Where can the SDS for every chemical at your command be found?
HAZMAT or Supply.
