Unit 1: Histology Flashcards
intracellular vs extracellular
epithelium
covers body, organs, on inside and outside
covering/lining, forms glands
includes cilia, apical surface, cell junctions, and basal surface
cell junctions
important to connect epitheal cells laterally
basement membrane
glue that holds epithelium to CT
* basal lamina
* reticular lamina (secreted by CT)
* CT underlying
cilia/microvilli
hair like structure on the apical surface of the epithelium
avascular
no blood supply to the epithelium
* gets nutrients from CT
* too far away cells degenerate
* a lot of cell turn over (death and new generation of cells)
simple
1 layer of cells
stratified
multiple stacked layers
pseudostratified
respiratory lining, looks columnar but everything touches the bsal membrane
squamous
wider than tall, looks like fried eggs
cuboidal
tall as they are wide, look like sugar cubes
columnar
taller than wide
trasitional
in the urinary system
-non distended: empty, stratified cubodial
-distended: full, stretches to simple squamous
connective tissue
quality of matrix determines the function of the CT
matrix (fibers)
