Lymphatic system Flashcards
lymph
interstial fluid of proteins, ions, water, and fluids leaked from capillary beds
lymphatic capillaries
located at interstial space, extremally permeable and has mini valves
opens when pressure in the interstial space is high
closes, trapping lymph, when the pressure in the interstial space is low
collecting vessels with lymph nodes
tight balls of lymph cells and proteins that have B cells which destroy toxins and create antibodies against them
lymph trunks
merge of lymph vessels, drain into two ducts
lumbar, branchomedistinal, subclavian, jugular, and intestinal
collecting ducts right lymphatic
collects lymph from right upper limb, right head/neck, right trunk
collecting ducts thoracic
left upper limb, left head and neck, abdominal cavity, pelvic region, and lower limbs (majority of the body)
edema
swelling, too much lymph in the system
lymphatic cells
B cell and T cells that form lymph nodes and filter out waste from the fluid
can also make up tonsils and spleen, that don’t filter lymph but filter other things
lymphocytes
white blood cells in the blood stream
B cells
T cells
type of leukocytes
primary lymphatic organs
thymus and bone marrow
secondary lymphatic organs
tonsils, spleen, lymph nodes
antigens
a toxin or foreign substance that must be filtered out of the lymph by the B cells
plasma cells
B cells develop into plasma cells to create antibodies and travel throughout the blood stream when a foreign substance is found
antibodies
created by B cells within a lymph node when a foreign body is recognized, sent out into the lymph/blood stream to destroy other of the same foreign bodies.
