The Phillipine-American War

A

After the Treaty of Paris transferred control of the Phillipines to the United States, Filipinos fought against their new colonizer. By the time the United States declared victory in 1902, over 200,000 Filipino civilians and 20,000 Filipino troops were dead. Around 4,300 Americans lost their lives in this war, but about 2/3 of these died from disease, not combat.

A

The Maori were the people present in New Zealand when the British arrived. They were not Aboriginal, having come from the Polynesia, but they had been their since the 14th century.

A treaty between the British and the Maori. Britain promised to protect the property rights of the Maori. Britain and settlers violated this treaty hundred and hundreds of times, giving rise to the Maori Wars.

A

Caliphate created by Usman dan Fodio in the town of Sokoto. Established a slave trade at a time when the British were trying to stop it.

Xhosa people

A

Native Africans in South Africa who did not want to be ruled by Europeans. Destroyed 400,000 head of cattle to get the spirits to remove the British from their lands. The cattle death caused famine and the death of thousands of Xhosa, but the British remained.

A

A well-organized African state on the eastern side of South Africa. Succeeded in fighting off the British at first, but eventually Britain won and colonized this part of Africa.

A

A Mande chieftan who led warriors to establish a powerful kingdom in West Africa in the 1868. Fought off the French, settled with them for a while, but eventually was captured and exiled when he tried to reestablish his kingdom in the Ivory Coast.

Fought against against the British and Egyptians in Sudan. Considered himself the “Mahdi” or guided one who would restore the glory of Islam in the region.

A

The fifth and final attempt of the British to subjugate the Asante Empire in West Africa. Yaa Asantewaa was a warrior queen who led the rebellion. When Britain won in 1900, the Asante Empire part of Britain’s Gold Coast colony.
